There is so much to be learned in life, sometimes I find myself overwhelmed with all that I do not know. I’ve heard it said, however, that the smartest people are the ones that know that they do not know much. I like that. I like it because I am acutely aware that there is so much that I have yet to discover and understand. I am committed, however, to the process of constantly learning more. My latest subject of fascination has been wondering and learning about earth science.

I haven’t honestly thought that much about earth science since I took a class in it in junior high school. At that time I hated everything to do with science and so I didn’t give much thought one way or another to earth science. I dreadfully made it through that class learning only the basics enough to get by (not the least of which I can remember now).

I’m not quite sure what inspired me to attempt to discover facts about earth science. I guess I began to become more interested in earth science as I had children and they grew up asking question after question. I could barely take them on walks at night without them asking me questions about the ground, the soil, the trees or the sun. I would fumble through answers and try to change the subject quickly as I admitted to myself that I really did not know much. So on my next trip to the library I picked up a few general books on earth science and began learning with my kids.

I have found that learning with my kids has become one of the best ways to grow in knowledge. I utilize their curiosity and take every chance I can at learning with them. It has been a great way for me to learn more about earth science and other things. I never knew how much motherhood would affect me, but I certainly didn’t know how much I would learn because of my children’s hunger for knowledge.

I have learned many things about earth science since our studies have begun. One of the biggest things I have learned is a deeper sense of appreciation for the world I live in. I have grown in amazement and wonder about the way the world works and about my small and insignificant place. I simply am astounded by the intricacies and details of our earth. Earth science has made me even more curious about the world around me.

The GPS or Global Positioning System is a “constellation” of 24 well-spaced satellites that orbit the Earth and make it possible for people with ground receivers to pinpoint their geographic location. The location accuracy is anywhere from 100 to 10 meters for most equipment. Accuracy can be pinpointed to within one (1) meter with special military-approved equipment. GPS equipment is widely used in science and has now become sufficiently low-cost so that almost anyone can own a GPS receiver.

The GPS is being used in science to provide data that has never been available before in the quantity and degree of accuracy that the GPS makes possible. Scientists are using the GPS to measure the movement of the arctic ice sheets, the Earth’s tectonic plates, and volcanic activity.

GPS are much more applicable when they are eminently portable. Usually, when people refer to portable GPS units, they mean handheld units. Types of GPS devices such as these are most often for biking, hiking, camping, sailing, fishing, skiing and exploring in the untamed wilderness.

Portable Global positioning systems and accessories come in the forms of hand held units, antennas, wristwatches, bike mounts, fish finders, and more. Since nearly major GPS manufacturer makes portable units, a lot of people are demanding for serious, strong GPS units.

Portable GPS systems give user such data as longitude, latitude, altitude, speed, and distance to destination or next stopping point. Stopping points are called “waypoints,” and they can be programmed into the GPS unit, as can a number of other points. There are a number of styles of portable GPS systems, so that everyone can find the model and the price that is just right for them.

Magellan, Garmin and Lowrance are among the top-quality major brands portable GPS systems. GPS systems are surprisingly affordable for the people who are looking into GPS technology for the first time. Even the most basic GPS unit offers a wealth of data to the user.

GPS units like maps are usually less comprehensive than those used for driving and boating. Topographical maps are the most useful maps for use in the wilderness which allow you to locate yourself within your immediate surroundings and navigate over rough terrain. However, not every unit comes with topographical maps. So if you want them, just make sure you buy a unit that includes them.

Wilderness GPS units are example of portable GPS units which is more or less accurate depending on their design and construction. Units that utilize differential GPS are far more accurate than those using standard GPS standard protocols. Also, units that use dual frequencies and kinematic (On-The-Fly), real-time, signal processing are more accurate than those using a single frequency and static, post-processing.

There are optional features in Wilderness GPS DEVICES that are less necessary for other applications but extraordinarily helpful for wilderness applications are included compasses, barometers, and altimeters. Some portable units can even receive weather forecasts so you will never be caught off guard by a sudden storm.

The science of fluxions was Sir Isaac Newton’s terminology for the new field of science known today as calculus. Newton and German mathematician Leibnitz appear to have discovered the principles of calculus in about the same time; but Leibnitz published his work first. For years, there was friction between the two countries, England and Germany regarding which country was to take credit for the discovery of calculus. In the final analysis, it appears that both men arrived at their findings at about the same time and independently of each other. Both men appear to have learned from Egyptian, Indian and ancient Greece sources.

The name calculus is derived from the Latin or Roman term meaning pebbles which were a type of counting stone. The term fluxion was Sir Isaac Newton’s term for the science of calculus. His book “Method of Fluxions was published in posthumously in 1736, although it was completed much earlier in 1671. Whether Leibnitz’s or Newton’s authorship of the science is accepted as being primary, the fact remains that the subject of calculus is the most powerful mathematical invention of modern times.

There are two major types of calculus, known as Infinitesimal Calculus and that part of the total which is called Differential Calculus. Both types are built on a foundation on analytic geometry and are related by the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. In simple terms, the theorem states that the sum of infinitesimal changes over time or some other quantity will add up to the net change.

To use a living plant as an example, as it grows, you can see the difference in size, or the increase over a period of several days and you could measure the growth, using conventional means. However, if you were to measure the difference in size after only ten seconds, it would be much more difficult to determine. If you then were to attempt to determine not the amount of growth over the time period, but the rate of growth over those seconds, you would not be able to do that using algebraic terms.

The science of calculus allows you to determine the rate of change for infinitesimally small amounts. There are a number of functions which impact the rate of change for the above example of a growing plant; things such as amount of sunlight, water, the temperature and others. However, if all other things remain equal, the variable for the rate of growth is time. By using calculus these variables can be determined. Most of the work in calculus is done by graphing formulas in order to determine the slope of the rate of change.
